Nutritional Ketosis

What’s the difference between Ketosis and Ketoacidosis?

The definition of Ketoacidosis: acidosis with an accumulation of keton bodies; occurs primarily in diabetes mellitus.

In layman’s terms: type one diabetes where the blood sugars and ketone levels reach a very high level—high enough to cause death.

Ketosis is different, where the average person’s sugar levels usually go down as the ketones go up.

This is a natural state of being. Without ketosis we would have been extinct long, long ago.

Getting your body into ketosis is highly advantageous if you want to live healthier on so many levels.

The biggest thing to understand about nutritional ketosis is that it seems to be against everything that we have learned. We need to consume high fat (animal, dairy, coconut oil, olive oil) to name a few, moderate protein and low carbs.

The best way to find out if you’re in a ketotic state is either with a blood test or a breath test. Using a blood sugar testing kit as also advantageous to see which foods elevate your blood sugar levels to an undesired level.

Typically it takes the average person a couple of weeks to get into a ketotic state, but everyone is built differently.
